Biography

Elnathan Wright Phelps, born 6 Sep 1823 at Westhampton, Massachusetts, was a son of Timothy Phelps (1775 - 1842) and Lois (Wright; 1778 - 1849).

He married 3 Oct 1849 Esther Almeda Alvord [b. 20 Aug 1820, Westhampton, daughter of Isaac and Sarah (Barker) Alvord; d. 30 Jan 1897, Bridgeport, Connecticut]. They had 3 children, born at Florence, Massachusetts:

1. Ernest Hopkins Phelps, b. 25 Sep 1850; married 12 Nov 1874 Ida Ketcham
2. Herbert Erwin Phelps, b. Dec 1851 ^[1]; married Delia Kirke; d. Aug 1893, Bridgeport, Connecticut
3. Denzel Cram Phelps, b. 12 Apr 1856; married 2 May 1886 Libbie Stannard; d. 26 Sep 1904, Bridgeport, Connecticut

This family was enumerated in 1850 at Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts, USA ^[2], then in 1860 at Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut, USA ^[3].

Elnathan Wright Phelps died 13 Aug 1875. The Alvord genealogy published that he died at Bridgeport, Connecticut. In contrast, the header panel of his online memorial site represents that he died in Westhampton, Massachusetts, where his grave is located ^[4]. The remains of his wife and at least two of her siblings likewise were transported from Bridgeport for burial in Westhampton, so possibly this was the case for Elnathan as well.
