" 24. Mary Alice4 Phelps (John Wallace3, David2, Philip1) was born August 13, 1860, in Northwood, Worth County, Iowa. She died August 22, 1933, in Orting, Pierce County, Washington. She married (1) George Emmett Potter September 17, 1879, in Cawker City, Mitchell County, Kansas. He was born about 1856 in Iowa. He died October, 1879, in Smith County, Kansas, only about a month after he and Mary Alice were married. He was the son of John Munson Potter and Lois S. Martin. His brother, James Leander Potter, married Mary Alice’s older sister, 22. Maria Elizabeth4 Phelps. She married (2) Mark M. Young about 1881, probably in Nebraska or Kansas. He was born February, 1861, in New York. He died after 1911, probably in Washington.

Children of Mary Alice Phelps and Mark M. Young are:

  1. 0 39 i. Frank5 Young, born about 1882 in Kansas.
  2. + 40 ii. Lloyd Phillip5 Young, born about 1883 in Downs, Osborne Co., KS.
  3. 0 41 iii. Frederick S.5 Young, born October 14, 1885, in Nebraska.
  4. 0 42 vi. Jesse Mable5 Young, born about November 8, 1889, in Beaver Crossing, Seward Co, NE.
  5. + 43 v. William Henry5 Young, born April 6, 1892, in Washington.


The 1910 census for Kit Carson County, Colorado, indicates that Mary had given birth to 6 children, of which 4 were alive in 1910.


She married (3) Henry C. Varner February 14, 1897, in Washington or Kansas. He was born January, 1856, in Tyler, Tyler County, Virginia. That part of Virginia became West Virginia during the Civil War. He died August 21, 1921, in Seattle, King County, Washington. He was the son of Ashberry Varner and Phoebe Davis.


She married (4) Louis Kraus January, 1919, in Washington. He was born April, 1859, in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. He died February 11, 1852, in Orting, Pierce Co., WA. He was previously married to Mary Alice’s older sister, 22. Maria Elizabeth4 Phelps. Louis, Maria and Mary are all buried in the same plot."
