" Another interesting tidbit about Roy Phelps, son of Fred Phelps and Emily Hogben. His family knew him as Roy Earl Phelps. I've got evidence his birth name was Earl Raymond Phelps, based on census data before 1921, his 1917 draft card, and two marriage records from Galena, Illinois. Apparently he was into bootlegging in Dubuque and abruptly left in late 1920 for the Bay Area. After that he appears as Roy Phelps and as Roy Earl Phelps on his death record. But it does explain why he named his first son Glenn Raymond Phelps."

"62. Earl Raymond⁵ "Roy" Phelps (Frederick Earl⁴, John Wallace³, David², Philip¹) was born August 16, 1897, in Somonauk, De Kalb County, Illinois. He died June 20, 1979, in Oakdale, Stanislaus County, California. He married (1) Viola Carl November 27, 1916, in Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. She was born November 9, 1899, in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. She died February 4, 1990. in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Samuel Carl and Kittie M. Barnes.

Earl and Viola were divorced about 1918, probably in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa.
He married (2) Florence D. Campbell May 10. 1919, in Galena, Jo Daviess County, Illinois. She was born about 1901, probably in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. She died unknown. She was the daughter of John Campbell and Mary Hannon. Earl left Dubuque sometime between February, 1920, and late 1921. He headed for the San Francisco area. It is not known what happened to Florence. A grandson of Earl seems to think that she left Dubuque with Earl but they were divorced before they reached the west coast.
He married (3) Mary Louise Romano about 1921 in Santa Clara County, California. She was born March 19, 1894, in Altavilla Milicia, Palermo Province, Sicily Region, Italy. She died February 18, 1956, in Oakdale, Stanislaus County, California. She was the daughter of Giovanni B. "John" Romano and Serafina Maria "Sarah" Parziale. She came to America as a young girl with her family in 1899. She had previously been married to a Mr. Panella, and had a daughter, Dorothy M. Panella, from that marriage. Dorothy was born September 23, 1916, in Santa Clara County, and died as Dorothy Frazier, January 17, 1999, in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California.
