Biography

Leland Benjamin Phelps was born on May 29, 1931 in Michigan, United States. ^[1] He was the son of Harvey and Virginia (Wall) Phelps. He lived with his family on a farm in Nelson Township, Kent County, Michigan, United States. ^[2]

Leland enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 10, 1952. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Leland was released on August 1, 1956. ^[3]

Leland passed away on December 16, 1975 in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. ^[4]He is buried at East Nelson Cemetery in Cedar Springs, Kent County, Michigan, United States. ^[5]

Leland's obituary reads: " Leland B. Phelps M.D., aged 44, of Bad Axe, Michigan, former Cedar Springs - Reed City - Grand Rapids resident, passed away Tuesday afternoon in St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw. Surviving are his wife, Barbara, six sons, Lawrence, Jon, Jeffrey, Michael, and Paul, all of Grand Rapids, and Stephen at home, one daughter Barbara at home, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Phelps and two brothers James and Steve all of Cedar Springs. Dr. Phelps reposes at the Bliss Funeral Home, Cedar Springs, where services will be held Friday at 3 PM, Rev. Ross Nicholson officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery. The family will meet friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 and Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. Rather than flowers the family would appreciate memorials to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation." ^[6]
