Biography

There is no proof that Timothy was born on 18 May 1681. The inventory of his father's estate (March 1683/84) states that Timothy was four years old, and his mother states that she has a young child to raise, so he was probably born in 1679 or 1680.

Timothy's mother was clearly not Hannah (who died in 1675). Timothy's mother was Mary the second wife who married Joseph Phelps in 1676. It is possible that Joseph Phelps had an earlier son Timothy born on 18 May 1671, but if so, that Timothy would have died young.

Phelps-1567 and Phelps-6039 appear to represent the same person because: Appear to be same person

Hi Sheryl,

This is an interesting problem. I am beginning to suspect that Joseph Phelps may have had two sons named Timothy: (1) Timothy (one born in May 1671 to Joseph's first wife) and that Timothy then died young. (2) Timothy (b. ca. 1680 to Joseph's 2nd wife) and his birth was not recorded (the 18 May 1681 date may have been due to confusion with the first Timothy). According to the March 1684 inventory of Joseph's estate, his son Timothy was only 4 years old. This would have made him about 27 years old when married in 1707. If there is a birth record showing a son Timothy born in May 1671, it should say that he died young and remove the marriage. ANYWAY, since there is a May 18th birthdate for one of these Timothys, there is presumably a birth record (which needs to be found).

Phelps-4454 and Phelps-1567 appear to represent the same person because: same family and spouse. His wife was recently merged. Though the DOB differs, need to verify and merge appropriately.

Thank you!
