From the February 5, 1931 ILLINOISAN-STAR newspaper, Beardstown, Illinois:

Roy Cole Saves Local Trio Who Plunged Into Cold River When Canoe Upset Here Tuesday.

The prompt action of Roy Cole, local river man, Tuesday was responsible for saving the lives of three Beardstown young men whose canoe was tipped over in the middle of the Illinois river adjacent to the Cole workshop at River and Adams Street. The trio, Teen Phelps, Rudy Tribble and Lynn Patterson had gone out on the choppy water in a canoe Tuesday afternoon.

When they had paddled about half way across the stream the high waves, whipped up by the strong wind overturned the frail craft and the boys were thrown into the ice cold waters. They caught hold of the overturned boat and held to it until their calls for help were answered by Roy Cole who was working near the river bank.

Mr. Cole quickly launched his gas boat and went to the boys all of whom were rapidly becoming cramped by the cold water. The boys did not attract the attention of their rescuer for about 15 minutes, it was said, and had Mr. Cole not been attracted just when he was it is thought that one or all of the trio may have become cramped, loosed their hold on the slippery upturned canoe and drowned.

When Mr. Cole arrived in his gas boat he assisted the boys into the craft and brought them ashore.

They are none worse for their cold bath today.
