John Phelps was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

John was born in 1840. His parents were John Phelps and Mary Bowen. [1] [2]

His father died when he was 8 years old. He was living with his widowed mother and siblings in Begelly in 1851. At the age of just 11 years, he was working in the coal mines. [3]

John married Rachel Walters in 1865. [4] They had three children by 1871: William, John, and Thomas. [5] Sadly, John died at the age of three in 1872. Four more children had come along by 1881: Mary Elizabeth, John, Catherine, and David. [6]

Another son, Richard, was born later that year, and a daughter, Margaret Ann, was born in 1883.

John passed away at the age of 46 in 1886. [7]
