In the mid-1800s, four families made up a wagon train to travel to Missouri. They were from an area around Bowling Green, Kentucky. Three families were related to one another; they were Henry and Tina Brockes. William Henry and Fredonia Gamblin and William Henry and Lucy (Lowry or Lowery) Phelps. The fourth family was the Robert and Nancy Pedon Bowman family.
When they arrived in Dent County, they settled in an area about six to eight miles east of Salem called New Home. William Henry Phelps and his family settled on a farm called the "Chester Place."
Their children were: Richard (b. Sept. 8, 1853 - d. in Dent County); James (b. 1854 - d. Dent County); Allen (b. Mar. 18, 1857 - d. Dent County); Belle (b. Apr. 4. 1859 - d. Dent County); John C. (b. Aug. 1860 - d. 1954 in Mission Hill, South Dakota); Thomas (b. Aug. 3, 1866 - d. Dent County); Briggs (b. Mar. 3, 1868); Joseph (b. Feb. 16, 1871 - d. on the farm in Dent County); George; Charles (b. Missouri - d. Denver. Colorado); Nellie (died on the farm in Missouri).
John Crittenton Phelps, son of William Henry, married Theodosia Godbey (parents: John Godbey and Mary Gilbert Ogles). John and Theodosia moved to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and their second child was born. Ervin, the first, was born in Sligo or on the farm, Bertha Irene (b. Oct. 25, 1892) in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They lived with Briggs Phelps in Arkansas for a couple of years, and John Phelps and his family returned to Missouri. He went to work in Sligo top filling in the iron furnace. Later Briggs returned to Sligo and bought a truck farm. James also had a farm near Sligo and sold fruits and vegetables in town. Richard had four children, Fred, Belle, Lucy, and Lola. They stayed in Arkansas.
In 1894 William Henry Phelps gave his son John C. forty acres of land on his farm, and the family moved from Sligo.
