Abel Phelps and Lois Willard, both of Lancaster, Massachusetts, married there on 7 May 1778.[2]
Children
Abel and Lois (Willard) Phelps were the parents of seven known children, the first four born at Lancaster, Massachusetts, the others at Alstead, New Hampshire:[3]
Abel Phelps moved his family from Lancaster, Massachusetts, to Alstead, New Hampshire, in 1787.[3] In 1790, the Abel Phelps household at Alstead was recorded as including one male over 16, one male under 16, and three females.[4] In 1800, the family included a male 26 to 44, a male 10 to 15, two males under 10, a female 26 to 44, two females 10 to 15, and three females under 10.[5] In 1810, the household of Abel and Peter Phelps consisted of one male each 45 and over, 26 to 44, 16 to 25, 10 to 15, and under 10, two females 45 & over, one female 16 to 25, and one female 10 to 15.[6] The household of Abel Phelps in 1820 included a male 45 and over, a male 16 to 25, and one female each 45 and over, 26 to 44, 10 to 15, and under 10.[7]
Abel Phelps does not appear in the census after 1820, but he was almost certainly the man recorded at Astead in the household of Peter Phelps, his son, in 1830 at between 70 and 80 years old[8] and in 1840 at between 80 and 90 years old.[9]
Death
The gravestone of Abel Phelps at the Walpole Village Cemetery in Walpole, New Hampshire, says that he died on 1 Sep 1848, at the age of 97 years and 14 days;[10] he was actually a year older. The 1899 Phelps genealogy says that he died at Alstead New Hampshire.[3]
