Biography

Ireland Native
Alured Phibbs was born in Ireland.
Alured Phibbs died young.

Alured was born in 1878.[1] He was the son of William Phibbs and Rose de Moleyns.

His father was with the Dorsetshire Regiment (54th Foot).

In the UK Census of 1891 he was recorded as a Boarder at Cleveland House, Radipole, Dorset, England. He was aged 12 and a scholar.

His father died in India in 1894.

On 29 June 1894 Alured was indentured at Penarth as an apprentice in the Merchant Navy.[2]

Sadly Alured died in 1895 at the age of about 17, when he was found to be missing from his ship, somewhere off the coast of San Francisco.[3]

Sligo Independent 18 January 1896, Pg 2:
LOSS OF THE CHAIRMAN'S NEPHEW
Mr Clarke proposed the following resolution - "That the Board desire to tender to their chairman, Mr Owen Phibbs, DL, their deep sympathy with him on the sad and untimely death of his nephew, Alured Ventry Phibbs, by drowning." He said he was sorry that he had to propose such a resolution, as he would rather wish to propose a resolution of congratulations to the Phibbs family. It was very sad, indeed, to see a young man lose his life.
The resolution was adopted unanimously.
Chairman- I beg to thank you very much for your kindness, and I assure you we shall always keep this resolution as a testimonial of your kindly feeling towards us. It was, indeed, a very sad occurrence, as my nephew was but a young man, 18 years of age, and beginning his career in life. How he was lost we do not know yet, as we only got a telegram from San Francisco that he had disappeared from off the ship. I assure you all the members of the family will be very grateful to you for the expression of kindness you have given.
Mr Mullany- Out of respect to the chairman, we would be happy to do anything.
The Board adjourned.[4]
