James Phillips was born in Vermont in 1813. He married Tina "Tiney" Phillips. They lived in northern New York state in the town of Henderson, where Tina's family lived. (Both families are listed in Henderson, NY in the 1840 census.) After two daughters were born, the Phillips decided to migrate to Wisconsin in 1844. They traveled with a covered wagon and two oxen. The family probably traveled north of Pittsburgh, PA and followed along beside Lake Erie. The Phillips settled near Racine, Wi. In 1850 they lived in Milford, WI with their two daughters and an additional daughter and a son. They were still there for the 1860 census. But sometime between 1860 and 1870 they moved their family, which now included six children, to an 80-acre farm in Texas Township in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. James died in 1895. James and Tina are buried together in Hope Cemetery in Texas Corners, MI.
