Biography

James Phillips was a son of William Phillips, and the only child mentioned in his father's will, dated April 16, 1654. The will granted the testator's house to his wife Elizabeth and son James, and it appointed James to serve as executor.[1]

James Phillips' inventory was dated 5 Jul 1677 and was sworn to by Mary Phillips, widow.[2] In the settlement of James Philips' estate, Mary, his widow received her share of his estate and was granted liberty to sell some of it in order to build a house to live in and the remainder of the estate to go to the children.[3]

A record of Taunton proprietors dated 11 May 1691 says that [son] William Phillips was to possess certain lands "in reversion, that is, immediately after the decease of his mother Mary, the wife of Richard Godfree, Senior of Taunton. " [4]
