Biography

Laura was born on May 11, 1892 at Cherry Fork near Helenwood in Scott County, Tennessee. She was the daughter of Pleasent Winford Phillips and Emily Clemons (Cecil) Phillips . She married Ellard Newport on February 7, 1912 in Scott County. She passed away on January 20, 1987 at the Methodist Medical Center at Oak Ridge in Anderson County, Tennessee.

Obituary,

Laura Della Phillips Newport, 94, formerly of Helenwood, who had resided at the Anderson County Health Care Center for the past nine years, passed away Tuesday afternoon, January 20, 1987, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge following a lingering illness. Mrs. Newport was the daughter of the late Winford Phillips and the late Emily Cecil Phillips and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ellard Newport; three sisters: Nancy Phillips Clark, Susie Phillips Moore, and Fairby Philips; and four brothers: Jim Euell Phillips, Henderson Phillips, John Young Phillips, and George Harrison Phillips. She was a member of the Cherry Fork Baptist Church for a number of years. She is survived by one daughter, Alicia Cross of Helenwood; one son, Clyde Newport of Ocala, Fla.; four granddaughters: Mrs. Harold Dean (June) Ross of Helenwood, Mrs. Harry (Wilma) Phillips of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Gary (June) Wartz and Judy Newport of Newark, Del.; three grandsons George E. Cross of Oneida, Edward Cross of Los Angeles, Calif., and Clyde E. Newport of Ocala, Fla.; ten great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at the West-Murley Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, January 23, with Rev. Milford Cecil and Rev. Harold Dean Ross officiating. Rev. Harold Dean Ross sang and Mrs. Phillip (Kimberly Jean) Kidd played the piano. Burial was in the Cecil Cemetery in the Cherry Fork community. Pallbearers were: Carl Brown, Roger Cecil, Wendell Cecil, George E. Cross, Phillip Kidd, and Gary Phillips. West-Murley Funeral Home in Oneida was in charge of arrangements.
