Biography

  • James Phillips was born to James and Abigail (Hathaway) Phillips on 15 September 1686 in Taunton, Plymouth Colony. James was the third of the name in his line (III), though he was styled first as Jr. and later as Sr. in his records as an adult.
  • James married Hopestill Babbitt (a.k.a. Bobet), daughter of Elkanah and Elizabeth (Briggs) Babbitt/Bobet, on 31 January 1717 in Dighton [1][2]
  • Elkanah Babbit of Berkley executed his last will on 2 December 1735. He left his daughter Hopestill Phillips forty shillings, to be paid after his wife's decease, and one fifth share of the residuum of his moveable estate after debts. He also appointed James Phillips and Gershom Crane of Berkley to be overseers in all matters real and personal of his son Joseph Babbit.[3]
  • James Phillips of Berkley executed his last will on 15 May 1756, witnessed by John Briggs Jr., Jacob Briggs Jr., and John Crane, leaving legacies to: [4]

    • son Ebenezer Phillips (land incl. a tract bounded by my brother Nathaniel Phillips, John Briggs, Jr., and David Briggs, and share in old iron works of Taunton, now in Raynham)
