1870 Arkansas, United States -- Name: Nancy Hardaway Female Age: 34 White Birth Year (Estimated): 1835-1836 Birthplace: Indiana

NOTE: INDIANA formed Dec 11, 1816. ILLINOIS formed Dec 18, 1818. IOWA formed on Dec 28, 1846. INDIANA borders Lake Michigan to the NW, MICHIGAN to the N, OHIO to the E, KENTUCKY to the S and SE, and ILLINOIS to the W.

LOOKED at map (google) and googled formation Iowa, Indiana. Iowa formed 1846 and Indiana formed 1816.

Technically, Nancy E. was NOT born in Iowa [b. 1830/36] Indiana and Iowa do not share a common border. Indiana and Illinois DO share a common border which "accounts for" some of the confusion between being born in IL and being born in IN in different census yrs

So I eliminate Iowa as a birthplace since it didn't exist when she was born, and didn't exist until 1846 -- she's also cited by Denzil and Maxine Carlisle as born in 1832; in the 1860 Census she's cited as born 1830; and in the 1870 Census she's cited as born 1834/35.

All this confusion is not uncommon. It is NOT the usual of situation but we can say x% of population doesn't know their actual DOB year nor their birth State or Territory -- in the Census years 1850 - 1940.

THE QUESTION -- It is not impossible Nancy Emorine Phillips was a (childless?) widow Mrs Phillips when she married Ishmael, the first born (known to me) child born Jan 1855, 2 yrs after the marriage date.

OF COURSE there's been researchers since at least 1950/58 (Denzil Carlisle and his wife Maxine, nice people, met them, among them) and others and still nothing said about the origins and parental / marital history of Nancy E Phillips prior to her marriage to Ishmael, at least nothing I found anywhere on line.

RESPONSE (left Unnamed by me) -- I know nothing of this family; however, it seems unlikely that at age 17 she would be widowed and remarried (given a year's mourning). While it is true that age and custom do not bar a marriage, it is how I start when seeking information to establish parameters for my search.

A widower with small children might seek a mother for his children quickly (for many it is a sibling of his wife or a maid servant).

But a 17-year-old widow having remarried? Perhaps in a time or place when 12-year-old girls are married off, but why go down research rabbit holes searching for zebras instead of horses, rather than begin by looking for horses?

ANSWER by Smith-157141 -- I doubt that a year of mourning was widespread given what I have seen in my own researches in south, south west and western states in the lower USA (or would be USA) 1850 through 1940

Custom is all very nice if you have the funds to support your lifestyle for that year, a network of friends and family, others to help and to rely on -- and if those did not exist, then what? if a man has a suckling child and a dead wife, where does he turn to? If a woman is widowed and no family or friends on the horizon and no funds, and no skills beyond "housewife" then what are her options?

I think necessity coupled with opportunity will over-ride any custom.

I AM NOT SAYING HERE that Nancy E Phillips WAS a widow when she married Ismael, only that she COULD have been. It is one more supposition among a number of suppositions that when stated in black and while might possible lead to the answer of what were the origins of Nancy -- like who were her parents? siblings? etc
