Biography

Berta, daughter of Absalom Washington Phillips and Margaret E Berry,[1] was born 4 April 1895 in Crockett, Houston County, Texas.[1][2][3] She was raised in a large family in Crockett, where her father was a farmer.[4] In 1900 the family included her parents Absalom W. (age 38) and Margaret E. (39), Elberta "Berta" (6), and her siblings Allison H. (17), Absalom W., Jr. (15), Jessie L. (13), Mary Ethel (11), Margaret B. (7) and William B. (3).[4]

By 1910, two of the older sons had established their own homes, leaving in Crockett Absalom W. (age 48, retail merchant), Margaret E. (48), Berta (15), Jessie (21), Ethel (20), Margaret (18) and Willie (12).[5]

Her future husband was described as 5'10", 140 lbs., with a mole on his lower left cheek, hazel eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion.[6][7] It is likely that the met before his service in the U.S. Army during World War I (22 June 1917 to 31 May 1919).[8]

About 1919 Berta married Roy Burleson Mainer,[9] son of Nicholas Mainer and Ella Nelms.[10] Together they had one daughter Marie Elaine (b. 13 October 1920;[11] m. and divorced Mr. Kuhn;[11] d. 15 August 1978).[11]

Throughout their married life, Roy and Berta remained in Lovelady. In 1920, his brother John's family was domiciled on the same street, where Roy B. (age 26, store owner) and Berta (24) resided,[12] By 1930, Roy (age 37) and Berta (34) were working together in their general store and raising their daughter Marie (9).[13]

The 1940 census shows that Roy (age 47) had completed two years of college (at Baylor); Berta (45) was a high school graduate; Marie (19) indicates she has completed four years of college(?).[14] At this time Roy is a private undertaker with a funeral home and Berta is working as a reporter for a local newspaper.[14] Later she worked as a women's counselor at a tool manufacturing company.[1]

Roy died from an acute cerebral hemorrhage on 16 February 1948. [10] Berta survived him for decades, succumbing 25 December 1973 in Houston, Texas, from an acute myocardial infarction.[1][2] She was buried with other family members in Evergreen Cemetery in Lovelady[3] beside her husband.[15] Their daughter died just five years after her mother in 1978.[11]
