Biography

Elsie Phillips was born 23 Dec 1873 in Lewisham district. She was the daughter of George Alfred Phillips and Ann (Sanders) Phillips. Her father was a draper. She had a twin sister Ethel.

Elsie probably never married, since she was still going by her maiden surname when she died.

Elsie's younger brother Jack became a wireless operator, and died 15 Apr 1912 when the Titanic sank, winning posthumous fame and public gratitude for remaining at his post sending SOS signals as long as possible.

Elsie's sister Ethel never married, and died in 1922.

Elsie's mother died in 1925, and her father in 1928.

Elsie died on 6 Apr 1953 at Roseacre, Priorsfield Road, Compton, aged 79. Her current or recent home address was given as Cott, Upper Manor Road, Farncombe. She was buried on the 9th with Ethel in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the consecrated section, in the grave next to that of her parents.
