Research Notes

This profile is for the father of Martha (Phillips) Graham and Robert Phillips of Cavanreagh. In his will, Robert names "Martha" as a sister (although does not give a surname).

Thomas Phillips (abt.1815-1905) of Cavanreagh also names his father as William on his marriage record; and Robert Phillips' will names as executor "Thomas Phillips of Cavanreagh" -- but does not state that Thomas is his brother.

There were two William Phillips of Cavanreagh in the 1831 census:

  • House 7: 1 family, 2 males, 2 females, 1 male servant, female servant; 2 R.C., 4 Protestant.
  • House 8: 1 family, 3 males 4, females; all Protestant.

There were no other Phillips households.

His name does not seem to appear on any headstone at Draperstown Presbyterian, nor Kilcronaghan Old Churchyard.

There were a lot of Phillips at Ballynahone Beg, Maghera -- not clear if/how the Cavanreagh Phillips were related.

In Griffith's Valuation for Cavanreagh:

  • 24a: William Phillips.
  • 24b: Robert Phillips.
  • 35: This lot is described as "mountain" and a large number of people as joint tenants, including William and Robert.

In 1869 24a and 24b both go to Thomas Phillips although a new lot 24d is created, held by Martha Phillips. Then 24d returns to Thomas Phillips in 1880.

The lessee Robert Phillips would probably be Robert Phillips (-1859).

Margaret Jane

In Letter 57 of The Graham Letters, Thomas Graham (abt.1811-1877) says that on a letter dated 4 July 1870 he received news of the death of "Margaret Jane Phillips" , his northern friend.

This could perhaps be:

  • D/1870/181/1022/3/231 Margaret Phillips 5th June 1870 17 Female Magherafelt

There were two deaths for Margaret Phillips in 1869 although with the frequency Thomas corresponded with his relatives at home, this would not have been the first time he heard the news.
