Biography

Reuben was born on 30 May 1739, Harwich, Massachusetts. Reuben is the child of Micah Phillips and Joanna Baker. He was married (marriage intentions filed 22 August 1761) on 03 December 1761, Harwich, Massachusetts, to Meribah Cahoon (b. 1742?; d. 18 February 1817, Canaan, Connecticut), daughter of James Cahoon and Rebecca Eldridge.

He served throughout the Revolutionary War (1776-1781; various records): https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?f.collectionId=2548057&q.anyDate.from=1739&q.anyPlace=Massachusetts%2C%20United%20States&q.givenName=Reuben&q.surname=Phillips

At Harwich (source: https://www.seekingmyroots.com/members/files/G004825.pdf): "In 1773, August 10th, a church was established by one Samuel Nickerson, a person from abroad. It was called the Baptist and the members, 'New Lights'. The meeting house was built in the southern end of the burying ground lying near the Alms House. Samuel Nickerson preached from 1770 to 1786." ( L) He was listed as "Elder" on the Church Records in 1776." Concerning the "Case of Elder Samuel Nickerson" (July 1785): The church met at Samuel Eldredges and the Elder desired a committee to be chose, to desire his wife to come to Church meeting and bring in all she had against him. The Church appointed Lumbert Nickerson, William Small and Reuben Phillips, and they came and desired her to come to meeting. The Elder said if she would come and bring in to the Church all she said she had against him, if she told one thousand lies against him, or say what she would of him, yet he would engage the committee and her, that he would carry her up to her father's and do all he had said to her."

Reuben Phillips' family appear at Harwich in the 1790 Census (Reuben being the male over 16, plus 3 males under 16, plus 4 females). Their son Eldridge is presumably Eldred who had moved out of that household, so the 3 males under 16 would be sons Reuben Jr., Bethuel, and another son. And since there were 4 females, there were probably two unknown daughters, in addition to wife Meribah and daughter Rebecca. Reuben Phillips and son Reuben Phillips Jr. had households in Canaan, Connecticut, during the 1800 Census. Reuben Sr.'s household included himself, wife Meribah, and two males age 10-15 (Bethuel age 15 and an unknown son probably about 11-13 years old). The two unknown daughters had either died or gotten married.

He was in Ontario County, New York, during the 1810 Census. And he was perhaps still in New York in 1820 (the Reuben in Canaan is now interpreted as Reuben Jr. (ages match for him and wife and their many children). Not sure if Reuben Sr. died back in Canaan Connecticut or died in New York (and body taken back to Connecticut for burial). If Reuben was 90 years when he died, that would have been about 1829. Both Reuben Sr, and Meribah are buried at Barrack Mountain Cemetery, Canaan, Connecticut.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Reuben by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Reuben:
