Walter John Phillipson was born on the 8 March 1850 at 4 Brixton Rise, and baptized on the 19 July 1850 at the Parish Church of Saint Matthew, Brixton Hill, in Brixton, London Borough of Lambeth, Surrey & London, England[1]. He was the son of Jonas Moses Phillipson and Matilda Constance Goldsmid.
In 1851, Walter (1) lived with parents Jonas (35) and Matilda (31); siblings Frederic (3) and Gertrude (2); House Servant, Hannah (Lee) (40) and Nurse Sarah (Allee) (42) at 4 Brixton Rise, Brixton Hill, Brixton, Parish of St Mary Lambeth, London Borough of Lambeth, London & Surrey, England[2]. By 1861, Walter (11) had been enrolled at a Grammar School, in King Street, in the Market Town of Wimborne Minster, at the confluence of the River Stour and the River Allen, on the Dorset Heaths, Dorset, England. He resided with School Master M.A., Henry (Pix) (39); Henry's wife, Adelaide (39); their children Maurice (4) and Julia (Pix) (11 months); Cook, Mary (Ashdown) (29); Nursemaid, Elizabeth (Shond) (23) and Housemaid, Jane (Harvey) (20) along with pupils Richard (Baker) (14), Charles (Lidderdale) (15), Richard (Burton) 12), Alan G. (Dalton) (10) and Charles (Douglas) (10)[3].
After Jonas' death in 1869, Matilda and her children emigrated to the Colony of South Australia, however, more research is needed to verify the exact date and ship. On the 15 March 1884, Walter and his brother, Clement were Storekeepers Storekeepers' Renewals Granted at Hackney Road, in Hackney, City of Adelaide, Colony of South Australia. Around the 14 February 1894, Walter boarded the ship "H.M.S. Himalaya" at the Port of Adelaide, which was bound for the Colony of Western Australia. The vessel arrived at the Port of Albany, on King George Sound, Great Southern Region, in the Colony of Western Australia, on the 17 February 1894[4].

Blake (3), Congreve, Drury, Penberthy, Gorrie (2), Phillipson, Tiernay, Thompson, Lewis, Burton, Newman, McDonald, Brookman, Flavel (3), Adams, Lynch, Merton, Cameron and Tracey. Passengers embarked for London: Mrs. Jones, and Messrs. Merritt, Jones and Munro.[5]
In that same year, Walter travelled to the Town of Geraldton, South West Region in the Colony of Western Australia, where he married Rose Ann Mckenzie in 1894 and they had one child together[6]. Between 1903 and 1906, the Phillipson family were living at 61 Edward Street, in the City of Perth, Western Australia, where Walter worked as a Sharebroker[7]. By 1912, Walter and Rose were living at Arnecliffe, in the City of Sydney, New South Wales but Walter had gone missing. In 1913, a Warrant was issued for his arrest, charged with deserting his wife and child.
On the 11 February 1914, Walter was arrested Apprehension of Walter John Phillipson in the City of Sydney, but the warrant was discharged as he offered to pay Rose £1 per week, which she accepted. However, in 1915, Walter, now a Licensee, lived with "wife" Emily (Phillipson) in the Town of Tarnagulla, in the Shire of Loddon, Grampians, 183 kilometres (114 mi) north west of the state capital, Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia[9]. Walter and Emily had moved to 239 Domain Road, South Yarra, in the City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia by 1922 and it appeared as if Walter had retired[10]. It was there at 239 Domain Road, South Yarra, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, that Walter passed away on the 25 January 1923 at the age of 72[11]. He is buried in the Church of England portion, Section ZB, grave number 159 of the Brighton General Cemetery, Corner North Road & Hawthorn Road, Caulfield South, City of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia[12].
