Biography

Bad Axe, March 16 - John T. Philp, 78 years old, and one of the earliest settlers of the county was found dead alone in his big house in Verona township Wednesday.

Mr. Philp had evidently been dead for several days. His little grandchildren passing the big stone house noticed that the daily papers had remained undisturbed in the mail box for two days. They told their father. who forced his way into the house. The aged pioneer was found lying face down on the floor. There were no signs of violence and Dr. Charles Herrington, who was called, pronounced death due to natural causes.

Mr. Philp went to Verona from Huron county. Ont., when he was in his teens. His father, Thomas Philp was the first settler in Verona township. Robert Philp, brother of the deceased, opened the first store in the city of Bad Axe and Sep Irwin, his brother-in-law, built the first hotel here, the old Irwin house.

John Philp was a well known figure throughout the entire county and a large part of the Thumb. For many years he was a cattle buyer and made trips from one end of the county to the other. He was a member of the board of supervisors for nearly 30 years.

Mr. Philp is survived by his widow, two sisters. a brother, five daughters and two sons.

The sisters are Mrs. Harris Sageman of Bad Axe and Mrs. Mary Pangborn, Farmington. The brother is Isaac Philp, who now lives in Bad Axe.
