John was born at Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia in 1888, ^[1] to parents John Philp (1857 - 1898) & Margaret Rose Talbot (1864 - 1929)

John married Ethel May Marrs in 1913 in Victoria ^[3] and lived in Footscray, Victoria, Australia ^[4] with two daughters, Marjorie Philp (1915–2002) & Lorna Philp (1917–1992) and step-daughter, Pearly Marrs (1906–1998) ^[5]

John was a slaughterman. Also worked in New Zealand for period of several months sending the money home to Australia as a slaughterman.^[6]

He died in 1929 at Heidelberg, Victoria ^[7]
