Biography

Janet "Jessie" Philp was the only daughter and the third of the seven children of Andrew Philp and Janet Kirk. None of the births or baptisms of the children appear to have been recorded.

According to census reports she was born around 1839 in the parish of Cupar, in the county of Fife in Scotland. [1][2]

She had five brothers:

William Philp (born 1831) [3][4]

Andrew Philp (born 1839) [5]

Robert Philp (born 1837) [6]

Captain John Philp (born 1839) [7][8]

Colour Sergeant James Philp of the Black Watch (born ca 18 January 1842) [9] &

Thomas Philp (born 1844). [10]

The census of 06 June 1841 makes no mention of Janet Philp. [11] This is because the original 1841 census returns for Cupar were lost in transit to Edinburgh when a ferry sank in the Firth of Forth. [12]

Janet Philp first appears in the census of 30 March 1851 where she is described as aged 15 and living at 53 Bonnygate in the town of Cupar in the parish of Cupar in the county of Fife in Scotland. [13]

On 14 August 1858, along with her brother younger John Philp (junior), her uncle John Philp (senior) and his extended family, Janet left Glasgow on the “S.S. Edinburgh” for New York, arriving there on 28 August 1858. [14]

At the US census of 01 June 1860, she is recorded at Jessie Phillips, aged 22 and a servant to Andrew Seeman, merchant of Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, USA. Andrew Seeman owned Real Estate valued at US$ 50,000 and had a personal Estate which was valued at US$ 12,000. [15]

During the American Civil War, Jessie Philp Served as a nurse. She ministered to the sick and wounded at Estes House in Keokuk, Iowa which had been converted to a hospital during the War. [16]

In 1875, Jessie Philp married Andrew Tweedy, a widower, in Iowa, USA. [17]

At the US census of 01 June 1880, Jessie is described as being aged 44, married and keeping house at Montrose, Lee County, Iowa, USA along with her husband Andrew Tweedy, aged 68, a farmer, who was born in Ireland. [18]

Andrew Tweedy died in 1886. [19]

On 27 September 1890, Jessie Philp married George Applebaum at Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa, USA. The groom was described as being aged 56, while the bride was 54. The groom's parents were described as Joseph and Maria Applebaum while the brides parents were described as Andrew Phillips (actually Philp) and Jeany Curik (actually Kirk). [20]

At the census of 01 June 1900, Jessie Philp is described as being aged 65 and living at Montrose, Lee County, Iowa, USA along with her second husband, George Applebaum. aged 68 and a farmer of 111 acres. [21]

George Applebaum died in 1914. [23]

On 04 September 1917, Jessie Philp died and was buried at Montrose, Lee County, Iowa, USA. [24]

On 22 October 1917 her will of 01 September 1917 was proved. After her debts including funeral expenses and doctor's bills were paid, the proceeds of her 40 acres of land in Lee County should be divided as follows: To her three nieces, Mrs Kate Freuhling, Mrs Laura Boyce Philp and Miss Nellie Philp, the sum of $200 each. The balance to be divided between Allan Philp, Robt. K. Philp, John E. Philp and Ralph G. Philp share and share alike. [25] The beneficiaries were all the children of her late brother, Captain John Philp, with the exception of Mrs Laura Boyce Philp, who was married to her nephew Ralph G. Smith.
