Biography

Martha Keech Philpott was christened 12 January 1764 at St. John’s Parish, Prince George’s County, Maryland.[1] She was a daughter of Barton Philpott and Martha Musgrove. When she was a young girl, her family moved to Frederick County, Maryland, near present day Knoxville.

Martha did not marry until she was 38 years old. On 15 September 1802, a marriage license was issued to James Allen and Martha Philpott, at Frederick County.[2] James Allen, a widower, lived nearby in Washington County, Maryland. Upon their marriage, Martha became step-mother to his five children: Martha Allen (who later married Elisha Easton), Archibald Allen, Henry Allen, James Allen, and Ann Allen (who later married Horatio V. Philpott, Martha’s nephew).

On 9 July 1804, Martha Keatch Allen was named in the will of her father, Barton Philpott. Martha and five of her siblings were bequeathed 2/3 of Barton’s personal estate (after the death of their step-mother, Barbara), indicating that they were the children of his first wife, Martha Musgrove.[3]

Martha was, likely, the female age 45 and over, listed in the household of James Allen on the 1810 U.S. Census at Lower Antietam Hundred, Washington County. [4]

In 1813, James Allen died, intestate. Martha Keich Allen posted £5,000 and was appointed administratrix of his estate on 21 June 1813, at Washington County. Elisha Easton, Lingan Boteler, and Hezekiah Boteler were her securities.[5]

On 9 April 1816, at Washington County, a marriage license was issued to Edward Boteler and Martha K. Allen.[6] Like James Allen, Edward Boteler was a widower, and upon their marriage, Martha became step-mother to his children, Cassandra Boteler, Henry E. Boteler, and Priscilla Boteler.

In 1820, Martha was, likely, the female age 45 and over, listed in the household of Edward Butler at District 1, Washington County.[7]

Martha, again, became a widow when her husband, Edward Boteler died in 1822. On 3 June 1822, Martha Botelar posted a bond of £5,000 and was appointed administratrix of the estate of Edward Butler, at Washington County. Christian Stonebraker, and Hezekiah Butler Sr. were her securities.[8]

Martha died before 20 November 1832, when Thomas Boteler was appointed administrator of her estate, at Washington County.[9] She died without issue at the age of 66. The place of her burial is unknown.
