Biography

Elizabeth Philpott was a daughter of Charles Philpott and Elizabeth Barton Smoot of Charles County, Maryland.^[1] Her birth date is unknown, though it was sometime between 1720 (a rough estimate of the year of her parent’s marriage) and 1740. Elizabeth’s eldest known child, William, was born about 1758, therefore it seems more reasonable that Elizabeth was born between 1735 and 1740. Some family trees on the internet give her birth year as 1729 without any proof. It appears that the source of the estimate may have been Noland Bowling, author of Meet Your Ancestors an oft-quoted genealogy of the Philpott family and other related families. In her book, Mrs. Bowling attempted to make her best guess at the birth order of the children and gave estimates of their birth years, spaced two years apart.^[1]

Elizabeth’s relationship to Charles Philpott and Elizabeth Barton Smoot would not be known with certainty if it weren’t for a Philpott family sketch written by Henry L. Ludlow about 1890.^[2][1] Henry Ludlow was a descendant of Charles and Elizabeth B. Philpott’s son, William Philpott. He wrote a sketch based on the memories of Reuben Davis, a son-in-law of Charles and Elizabeth B. Philpott’s grandson, Charles Philpott Taylor. Mr. Ludlow did not explain, in his sketch, how the information had been passed down to him from Reuben Davis. In his sketch, Mr. Ludlow listed the four daughters of Charles Philpott and Elizabeth Barton Smoot as "Eleanor, Elizabeth, Susan and Mary".^[2] Regarding Elizabeth, he stated the following:

"Elizabeth, second daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Philpott, was married in Charles county, Maryland, to Thomas Weatherford, after which they moved to Frederick county, same state, and thence about the year 1778 to the state of North Carolina, where said Elizabeth died, leaving two children named William and Thomas."^[2]

Thomas and Elizabeth Weatherford’s eldest known son was William Weatherford, born about 1758. Therefore, their marriage is estimated to have occurred about 1757 at Charles County, Maryland.

Elizabeth (Philpott) Weatherford died sometime after 1778, probably at Caswell County, North Carolina.^[2] No trace could be found of Elizabeth (or her husband) on the 1790 U.S. Census, so it is assumed that she died between 1778 and 1790.
