Eleanor Philpott was born about 1700, at William and Mary Parish, Charles County, Maryland. She was a daughter of Edward Philpott and Susanna Posey.[1]
On 19 August 1718, Eleanor was named in the will of her father. She was unmarried but appears to have been of legal age. Eleanor was bequeathed a woman slave named "Mareah".[2]
The source has been lost, but about 1720, Eleanor had an illegitimate son, and was charged with bastardy.
On 21 March 1722/3 (probate 20 April 1723), Eleanor was named in the will of James Cottrell (Jr.).[3] James was a brother-in-law of John Philpott, Eleanor’s brother. He left legacies to his brother Thomas Cottrell, a nephew, a godson, and to his sister Anne, wife of John Philpott. James also left the following legacy to Eleanor:
"I give and bequeath unto Ellinor Phillpott all that she is indebted unto me and also a colt which I had of her"
Eleanor did not marry before writing her will on 22 January 1724/5.[4] In her will, she requested that her young son, Edward Philpott, be placed under the guardianship of her brother, John Philpott, who was also appointed Executor. Here follows an abstract of Eleanor Philpott’s Last Will and Testament:

On 23 February 1724/5, Eleanor’s brother, John Philpott gave bond as Executor of Eleanor’s will. The sureties were Charles Philpott and Francis Posey.[5] When an inventory of Eleanor’s estate was recorded on 10 March 1724/5, her brothers, Edward Philpott and Charles Philpott were named next-of-kin.[6] A final account of her estate was recorded on 1 May 1726.[7] The place of Eleanor’s burial is unknown.
