↑ Unknown Philpott (aft 1853-bef 1860) portrait, original, inscribed and signed on the front: “My father’s brother that died young”, and on the back: “Pa’s brother”. Portrait is 6-1/2” x 8-1/2”, tin type, colored. The boy in the image appears to have been at least four years old, therefore, he was not the child who lived from 1865 to 1866. He did not appear on the 1860 or 1870 census. It seems most likely that he was born after his parent’s marriage in February 1852, and died before his parents were recorded on the U.S. census, in July 1860. He may have died while his parents were living near Brunswick. It is curious that Hezekiah and Sarah were married in February 1852, but their eldest known child, William, wasn’t born until October 1858. This increases the possibility that there was at least one child born before William. This portrait was a keepsake of David Edward Philpott who may have inherited the portrait after the death of his father. The portrait was handed down to David E. Philpott’s son, William Lafayette Philpott, who wrote the inscription on the tin type. William L. Philpott, in turn, left the portrait in the possession of his son, W.R. Philpott.
