Benjamin Philpott was born 21 February 1766 at St. John’s Parish, Prince George’s County, Maryland.[21][22] He was a son of Barton Philpott and Martha Musgrove.
On 25 October 1786, a marriage license was issued to Benjamin Philpott and Elizabeth Hackney at Richmond County, Virginia. The record noted that Elizabeth was a daughter of Benjamin Hackney of Richmond County. Benjamin Hackney also acted as her security.[23] A marriage license was recorded for the same couple at Frederick County, Maryland. The license in Maryland was also dated 25 October 1786.[24] Two other Hackney-Philpott marriages occurred at Frederick County, within a two-year time period:
Mary Barton (Philpott) Garrott and Elizabeth Warren Philpott were, both, siblings to Benjamin Philpott.
Benjamin Philpott did not live long after the date of his marriage. He died before 22 July 1790, when an inventory of his estate was made by Joseph Gwinn and John Hilleary at Frederick County, Maryland.[25] He was about 34 years old. Reports that Benjamin was buried at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland are inaccurate (the cemetery wasn’t established until more than 60 years after his death). Benjamin was likely buried in a family cemetery on his father’s Merryland tract in Frederick County. On 16 August 1793, a final account of Benjamin’s estate was recorded by his father, Barton Philpott, administrator, at Frederick County.[26]
Benjamin Philpott and Elizabeth Hackney had one child, Horatio V. Philpott. When Benjamin’s father, Barton Philpott, wrote his will on 9 July 1804, he left a bequest of £15 to his grandson, Horace Philpott, to be paid when Horace reached the age of 21 years.[27]
