Biography

Benjamin W. Philpott was born before 1766 because he was of legal age when he was named in the will of his uncle Benjamin Philpott in January 1787. [1] He was a son of Unknown Philpott, an unidentified brother of his uncle Benjamin Philpott . It is considered that this Benjamin Philpott was a brother of John Philpott, another nephew of Benjamin Philpott, but this has not been proven.

Shortly after the death of his uncle, Benjamin Philpott was living in Henry County, Virginia. "At a church meeting the second Sat. in Dec. [1788] received to our fellowship by experience Benj. Philpott, Frances Ferris, James Whitsitt, Markham Lovel, Britt Stovall, negro George, Negro Blackman, Negro Jack, Negro David, also Susannah Clark."[2]

According to Bible records, Benjamin Philpott married a woman named Sarah (surname not recorded) 11 November 1790, probably at Patrick County, Virginia.[3] On 2 December 1788, "B. W. Philpott" witnessed a deed made by John Baker, Sr., to Abraham Penn.[4] He continued to witness many deeds but after this date, he signed as "BEN Philpott". By 8 March 1793, he was living in Patrick County when he made a deed of trust to George Hairston.[5] On 1 October 1794, Abraham Penn sold to Benjamin Philpott 70 acres on the Branches of Blackberry Creek, bounded by the north side of Bull Mountain Road, for £5.[5] On 28 December 1796, James Lyon, Commissioner of Patrick County, sold to Benjamin Philpott lot #6 (one acre) in the Town of Taylorsville [now known as Stuart] for £3.[5]

Benjamin W. Philpott died in 1825.[3] On 12 May 1825, a sale of his property, including furniture, books, and a horse, was conducted by A. Staples.[6]
