Biography

William W.K. Philpott was born about 1795 at Martin County, North Carolina.[1] He was a son of Charles Philpott and Dinah Manning.

He was, likely, one of the three males under age 10, enumerated in the household of Charles Philpott on the 1800 U.S. Census at Martin County.[2]

He may have been one of the two males aged 30-39, living in the household of his father, Charles Philpott, on the 1840 U.S. Census at Martin County,[3] though it is more likely that his age was between 40 and 49 years old.

On 13 August 1841, William was named as heir and joint Executor (along with his brother Reuben) in the will of his brother, Micajah M. Philpott, at Martin County (Martin County, Will Book 2, page 284).[4] In the will, Micajah bequeathed all of his land and property to his three brothers, William, Reuben, and Mills.

On 28 September 1847, William was named as heir and joint Executor (along with his brother Reuben) in the will of his father Charles Philpott, at Martin County (Martin County Wills, volume 2, pages 376-377).[5] William was bequeathed part of his father’s land, goods, and chattel.

Wm. Philpot appeared in the household of his father, Charles Philpot, on the 1850 U.S. Census at Martin County.[6] He was listed as a 35-year old laborer, born in North Carolina, though his age cannot have been accurately recorded. William was always listed before his brother, Reuben (born about 1810), in wills and real estate transactions. This indicates that William was born before 1810, instead of about 1815 as indicated by the 1850 U.S. Census.

On 21 April 1857, William (and brother Reuben) witnessed the will of his brother Mills E.M. Philpott at Martin County (Martin County Wills, Volume 2, page 448).[7]

On 21 December 1859, William was named as heir and Executor in the will of his brother Reuben W.K. Philpott, at Martin County (Martin Co Wills, Volume 2, pages 468-469).[8] William was bequeathed two guns, and, along with his sister Elizabeth, William was bequeathed Reuben’s land.

W.W.K. Philpot appeared as Head of Household on the 1860 U.S. Census at District 8, Martin County.[1] He was listed as a 65-year old farmer, born in North Carolina, with real estate valued at $1,500. Also living in the household was his sister Elizabeth (though she was erroneously identified as his wife by the census taker), his nephew, and a cousin.

William W.K. Philpot died between 14 September 1860, when he wrote his will, and January 1861 when probate of his will was recorded (Martin Co Wills, Volume 2, pages 493-494).[9] William died without a wife or children. An abstract of his will follows:

  • I give to the Philpot Family 50 square feet at the old family burying ground, as a place of burying
  • I loan to my sister Elizabeth Philpot all my land, household and kitchen furniture, stock, growing crop, farming utensils, a mare and colt, $20, lard stands, and a wood clock
  • I loan to my nephew James A. Philpot, at the death of my sister Elizabeth Philpot, my part of the land called the House tract, and one horse
  • I give to my cousin Emaliza Manning $10 for services rendered to me by her
  • I give to my nephew James A. Philpot one feather bed and furniture, one book of medicine, medicine bottles, and a gun
  • I loan to my cousin Emaliza Manning one feather bed stead and furniture; and I give her one steer, and sow
  • I loan to my sister Elizabeth Philpot the contents of the smoke house, my grind stone and hand mill; also my English musket
  • I loan my double barrel gun to to my nephew Wm. W. Philpot; and my single barrel gun to my nephew Charles E. Philpot, when they arrive at the age of 21
  • after the death of my sister Elizabeth Philpot, the residue of my property to be equally divided amongst my brother M.E. Philpot’s children, Mary E. Philpot, and Emalizer Philpot
  • in the event that my sister Elizabeth Philpot should marry or die, the items loaned to her to be divided equally between my brother M.E. Philpot’s children: James A. Philpot, Mary E. Philpot, Emalizer Philpot, William W. Philpot, and Charles E. Philpot
  • my money, notes, and executions to be divided equally amongst my sister Elizabeth and the children of my brother, M.E. Philpot
  • signed 14 September 1860 by W.W.K. Philpot
  • witnesses: M.C.S. Cherry & J.A. Pursig
  • probate: January Court 1861
  • no Executor named

The location of William’s burial is unknown, but it can be assumed that he was buried in the cemetery, located on the Philpott family farm, and mentioned in his will. There is no evidence that William had either a wife or children.
