Obituary

GIROUARD, Rita (Phipps) (1921-2013) was born into Eternal Life on September 1, 2013. Her beloved husband, William Girouard; her parents, Frank and Rita Phipps; and her sister, Lorraine Lucero preceded her in death. Rita was a native Californian. Born and raised in San Francisco, she attended St. James Grammar School and Immaculate Conception Academy. Upon graduation from ICA, she entered the order of Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose. As Sister Mary Michael, O.P. she was a dedicated teacher and an admired administrator in northern and southern California and Oregon between 1940-1969. Among her fondest memories were the ten years she spent as principal of Sacred Heart High School in Los Angeles. After leaving the Dominican order in 1970, Rita served for five years as the Assistant Director of a student exchange program sponsored by the University of San Francisco. Following this, she returned to southern California and soon after met her husband-to-be, Bill Girouard. Happily married for thirty-seven years, they enjoyed travelling and entertaining Bill's Cal Poly Pomona faculty, friends, and students in their South Pasadena home.
