Retrieved from http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article66355926 A shade of gloom came over the town on Thursday evening last when it became known that an old and respected resident, in the person of Mr. William Phipps, sen., had passed away suddenly, yet peacefully, at ten minutes to 6. He complained of a pain in his side, and went and laid down, and shortly afterwards expired. He was a fine type of the old Colonial gentleman ; upright, truthful, honest, and thrifty. Charitable to a fault, and never afraid of work, which he did with all his might up to the day of his death. In his early days he was one of the pioneers on the Northern rivers, where his eldest son, William, now resides. The respect in which the late Mr. Phipps was held was evidenced by the very large attendance at his funeral on Saturday. The coffin was borne by his relatives and friends from the house to St.Peter's Church of England cemetery, thus complying with a wish of the deceased not to be placed in a hearse. People from all parts of the district attended to do honor to this grand old citizen who had passed his 75 years of life without incurring the ill-wish of anyone. The deceased leaves a widow and five sons, Messrs. William, Hilton, Zabud, Lotan, and Thomas Phipps, and two daughters,Mrs. G. Hough (Richmond), and Mrs. Gascoyne (Penrith). Rev. J. Howell Price read the impressive service in St. Peter's church and at the grave, and the funeral arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr. A. Price.
