Robert Pickard was born about 1806, the son of Jonathan & Agnes Pickard of Loxhore, Devon, where Jonathan was a tenant farmer, although they lived in the village itself.
Robert married Elizabeth Mogridge (born in 1813 at Charles, Devon to Abraham & Jane Mogridge) at Loxhore in 1837. His bride's and his mother's maiden names were the same, so they would have been related somehow.
Robert was an agricultural labourer and he & Elizabeth remained living at Lower Loxhore, near Robert’s brother, farmer Abraham Pickard.
There is no record of them in the 1841 census but in 1851 Robert & Elizabeth at Lower Loxhore had three surviving sons: John 8, Abraham 6 & George 4.
Ten years later, those boys had all left home and only the last surviving son is at home: Thomas Pickard, aged 4. They had a 10-year-old ‘house servant’ Millicent Gill, who was possibly an orphan they had taken in and may be related to other Gill girls employed as servants by other members of the Pickard / Pugsley / Tucker families.
Like George, and probably his other brothers, Thomas left home before he was 14. The 1871 census lists Robert & Elizabeth on the last two lines of the last page so, unless there is a missing page, they had no other children and no ‘house servant’.
Robert Pickard died in the autumn of 1874 ‘at Barnstaple’, the nearest large town to Loxhore, although it is possible he actually died at Loxhore and the death was registered at Barnstaple.
They had 4 children:
