Biography

Based on his age and birthplace of Loxhore on census records, the most likely birth record for John Pickard is in the Jul-Sep summer of 1842, registered at Barnstaple, Devon, although there is no baptism record to confirm this.

8-year-old John is listed on the 1851 census living with his parents at Lower Loxhore. By 1861 at 19 he was a tailor, boarding with the young Symons family at North Walk, Barnstaple, the nearest large town to the rural Loxhore district.

John and Elizabeth Greenslade (born about 1840 in Barnstaple, Devon) married in the Jan-Mar winter of 1862 at Barnstaple and began having their 13 children together, all born in Barnstaple, although only 4 survived infancy.

John carried out his tailoring trade at Barnstaple, from premises at Castle Lane, then Lower Church St and finally Queen St.

John Pickard died in the Jan-Mar winter of 1905 at Barnstaple.

Their four surviving children were:

1. Mary Ann Pickard was born about 1863. She appears on the 1871 census as an 8-year-old but is not with the family in 1881. She was living with uncle Abraham Pickard and his family at Swansea in 1891, presumably employed as a house servant or in the bakery shop – no other records have been found but she must be one of Elizabeth’s “4 children still living” in 1911

2. Edwin Pickard born in 1866. He became a plumber and remained with his parents until marrying at age 34 in 1900. His bride Eva Baker was born in 1871, the first of three children for her unmarried mother who worked as a wool sorter in a factory at Pilton, Barnstaple.

Eva also worked in a factory, as a glove ironer. Edwin & Eva had no children and lived at Eva’s home village/suburb of Pilton. There are no records for them after the 1911 census

3. Sarah Jane Pickard was born 1869 and appears age 12 on the 1881 census but disappears after that – no other records found but she must be one of Elizabeth’s “4 children still living” in 1911

4. Louise Pickard was born in 1880 and did not marry. She remained living with her parents and was still with her widowed mother Elizabeth in 1911, listing her occupation as a casual general domestic servant. She never married and died in 1954 at Barnstaple, age 73
