Rev Matthew Pickard was a Methodist Minister as well as a husband and father. Matthew's father was a carpenter and shipbuilder and he grew up in the Welbeck Road, Walker, close to grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins relatives (including his uncle Matthew Pickard that he was named after). In the early thirties Matthew went to Leeds to train as a Methodist Minister, and following Ordination he served in a a number of different circuits. In 1938 Matthew married Dorothy Imeson and together they had three children. The family continued to move between circuits until Matthew died in Beeston, Nottinghamshire where he was serving as a minister, he was survived by his wife, three children and the first four of his eventual ten grandchildren.

1933 - Matthew was Ordained as a Methodist Minister[4] and served in Headingley, Hull, Middlesborough and several other circuits.
1938 - Matthew Pickard (31) married Dorothy Imeson (33) (born on July 20, 1904 in Stockton, Durham, England; daughter of Alfred Imeson and Florence Ruth (Whittaker) Imeson) on Apr 17 1938 at the Milton Street Methodist Church, Saltburn by the Sea, North Yorkshire, England according to reports in the local paper. Their marriage was registered in the Cleveland district of Yorkshire[5]. Together they had three children with middle names reflecting their grandparents:
1939 - Matthew was recorded as a Methodist Minister in the UK Register on Fri 29 Sep 1939 at 63 Hamlyn Avenue in Kingston Upon Hull, Yorkshire (East Riding), England[6]. He was living with his wife Dorothy and presumably the first of their three children.

1972 - Matthew Pickard died in the evening of 4 Dec 1972 in the intensive care unit of Nottingham City Hospital, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England according to reports in the local paper, while serving as a Minister in Beeston, Nottinghamshire and living at 1 Cumberland Avenue, Chilwell, Beeston. He was survived by his widow, three children and the first four of an eventual ten grandchildren. His death was registered in Nottingham[7]. His funeral was on 11 Dec 1972 at the Chilwell Road Methodist Church in Beeston, Nottinghamshire (according to the newspaper report). His estate passed probate on 19 Jan 1973 in Newcastle upon Tyne with a value of £5141[8].
