John Pickard was the thirteenth of fifteen children of John Pickard, a miner originally from Derbyshire and Eleanor Boustead from Cumbria. He was born in 1873 in Gosforth and lived in or around Newcastle Upon Tyne his entire life. When he was 14 his father died in a Mining Disaster and he was brought up by his mother and unmarried older brother. He did his training as a Carpenter and worked in the collieries and shipyards for his whole career. In 1899 he married Mary Teague and together they had two children. He was a Freemason and in addition to regalia kept in the family his death notice confirmed he was a Worshipful Brother and Companion.
1873 - John Pickard was born on abt 17 Aug 1873[1] in Gosforth, Northumberland, England and his birth was registered in the Tynemouth district[2]. He was baptised on 13 Oct 1873 in the Primitive Methodist Chapel at Nelson Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland[3]. He was the thirteenth of fifteen children of John Pickard, a miner originally from Nottinghamshire and Eleanor Boustead from Cumbria. He was almost certainly named for his paternal grandfather John Pickard (1804-1868) as was an older brother John Pickard (1854-1854) who had died young.
1881 - John was 7 and a Scholar in the UK Census on Sun 3 Apr 1881 at West Wylam, Prudhoe, Hexham, Northumberland[4]. He was living with his parents and seven siblings and it is notable that almost every child was born in a different place, a result of the itinerant nature of his fathers work.
