Biography

Margaret (Peggy) Whatley was his 2nd wife, 1st wife unknown, as of yet. It may be difficult to ascertain which children were born to which wife, although certainly not all of them were born to Peggy.

John and brother Henry are listed in the State Archives of NC as having been paid for furnishing supplies to the militia of NC, VA and SC during the Revolutionary War.

Mentioned in will:

  • Wife: Peggy
  • Daus: Sally, Rebecca Steel, Fanny Crutchfield, Catherine Efland,
  • Sons: Daniel, Jesse, Thomas, Henry, James, John, Alex, Isaac, Richard, Elisha, Michael
  • Grandson: John H. Pickard (not sure whose son he was but he was Rev. John H. Pickard FAG Memorial 10630610 B. Mar 1783, m. Anne Forrest 10 Jun 1812, d. 11 Sep 1858 in Caswell County)

Research Notes

Find a Grave does not contain a photo of headstone and the memorial says that his parents are Henry Pickard and wife Elizabeth. This isn't correct A) because while Henry did have a son John, he died before Henry did as implied in his will and B) Henry would not be old enough to be this John's father. Henry Pickard (Pickard-1138) was this John's brother, parents unknown.

This entry seems promising (from an old RootsWeb https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/j/o/h/Katie-Johnston-Alabama/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0735.html):

"William Henry PICKARD (b. 1724, d. Nov 1790) William Henry PICKARD (son of Nicholas PICKARD and Anna Barbara WEISER) was born 1724 in Schoharie, Schoharie Co., NY, and died Nov 1790 in Chatham County, North Carolina. He married Elizabeth Unknown on Bet. 1750 - 1751 in New York. Notes for William Henry PICKARD: Our William Henry Pickard was one of 8 known children. His brother John/Johannes Pickard and he were the oldest boys in the family. They left their home in New York and came to Orange Co., N.C. We believe they came after John's first wife died which would be between 1765-1772.

(Edit: good thought except that those parents (Pickard-246 and Weiser-63) already have sons (Pickard-653 and Pickard-654) with full profiles, William Henry having gone to Canada. So either both of those profiles are wrong or these weren't John and Henry's parents.)

John lived on one side of the Cain Creek of the Haw River and Henry lived on the other side, which became Chatham Co., N.C. (John's land on the other side stayed Orange County). Land deeds show that John purchased his land in: "Orange NC Land Entry#658 14 Sep 1778 Tho. Larkley, Little CAIN Creek, adj. James McBride, John Pickard, Hawfield, Old Road." Our Henry's land deed shows: "ORANGE COUNTY DEED BOOK 3 P.117, 6 February 1780, John Rainey of Orange granted to Henry Pickard, land on N. side of Haw River in the Hawfields and part of Cain Creek. Witnesses: John Steel, Henry Steel, proved Feb 1780 by John Steel".

Brother John Pickard was married twice and had 12 children by each wife. We do not have the names of all 24 children nor if all lived to become adults. There are many researchers that have in error listed this Henry as John Henry and it is very possible that after our John died, prior to 1790 (date of our Henry's will) this Henry may have added John to his name. (German naming tradition). Brother John Pickard died in 1812 in Orange Co., N.C. and left MANY, MANY Pickard descendants. His descendants have helped me to locate these descendants."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I also doubt that this John Pickard was from Massachusetts, there is no hard evidence to support that conclusion, even though it is repeated on many sites.

However: Goodspeed's History of Tennessee 1887, "Biographies of Weakley County," has info on a later John Pickard, "son of Thomas and Mary (Workman) Pickard, both born in Orange County, N. C., in 1793 and 1800, and died in Tennessee in 1859 and 1874, respectively." Thomas Pickard was John's youngest son, noted in the will. The book continues: "Our subject's grandfather, John Pickard, was a native of Wales. After coming to the 'United States he settled in North Carolina."

So that seems to be a good indication that this John Pickard was from Wales, not Massachusetts. The lineage and locations line up.

To M (Boynton) B: I agree with you. I seriously doubt he was born in Massachusetts, I don't think he's linked to the right parents, and I also doubt he had the middle name Henry. The NC records I've seen are all just as John. Another Pickard researcher told me he married Margaret Whatley in 1785 in Orange County NC.
According to George Brained Blodgette and Amos Everett Jewett. Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts. 1933. Reprinted by the New England History Press, Somersworth, New Hampshire. 1981. Page 348. Also available at: [1]

Francis and Edna Northend Pickard did not have a son named John Henry born in 1730. Their son John was baptized at Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Province on November 23, 1718 then died on January 6, 1719. I might have read & copied from half of this book & I have never seen anyone move from Rowley to North Carolina during the 1600s or 1700s. Moves are within Massachusetts or to CT, NH, ME, RI, VT, NY, and NJ.
