Biography

Jean Pickens was the fourth child of Andrew Pickens and Nancy Davis. According to Sharpe, she was born circa 1740, which would make her about eighteen at the time of her marriage to Robert Miller in early 1758. She was still alive at the time of the 1790 census and was listed as a head of household, with one male over 16, two males under 16 and two other females. She is not listed in the 1800 census; however, her son Ebenezer's household consisted of two males 16-26 (probably Ebenezer and Joseph, with John Henry possibly in school) and one female over 45, who was probably Jean Pickens Miller. Andrew Miller and his family were seperately listed in the 1800 Abbeville Census. Robert, Ann and Margaret were all in Mississippi by 1800.

Robert Miller courted Andrew's daughter, Jean (Jane) Pickens. However, Robert Miller's courtship of Jean Pickens offended the strict teachings of the church. In late May 1758, Rev Simpson reported as follows: "Mr. Robert Miller was deposed and laid under the sentence of excommunication for uncleanness with a woman of his own charge. It seems he had once been deposed already by the Associate Presbytery in Scotland for the same iniquity and has been too too often guilty. At this time, he has married the woman."

They had children: Robert Miller, Jr., Anne Miller (Simmons), Andrew Miller, Ebenezer Erskine Miller, Jane Miller, Margaret Miller (Hughes), Joseph Miller and John Henry Miller.

Jane passed away in 1824 and was buried in the Old Stone Church Cemetery, Clemson, Pickens County, South Carolina. [1]
