The first John Pickering had two sons, John and Thomas. John inherited Pickering's neck in Portsmouth. Thomas from whom all who bear the name of Pickering are descended, inherited the farm in Newington. Not long after he began to build his log cabin on the bay, and started clearing the land, an English man-of-war anchored in the Piscataqua River. A press gang was sent ashore to obtain recruits. Some of them met Thomas while he was engaged in felling trees on his premises. After conversing with him and complimenting him on his muscular appearance, they informed him that he must follow them. He declined, and on their commanding him to do so, he seized one of them by the neck and bore him to the ground with a threat to sever his head from his body, at the same time raising his ax. The fellow begged for mercy, and with his companions at once beat a retreat.
