Frederick was born in 1867 in St Mary, Reading in Berkshire.[1] Son of James and Jane Pickett. His family moved to Reading some time between 1861 and 1865 where his father worked as a plate layer for the G.W.R.
As a young man he was in trouble with the law on more than one occasion, stealing apples on 14th Aug 1881,[2] stealing money from a pub register September 1884 [3]and on the evening of 15th December 1884 robbery of tobacco, cigarettes and pipes from a tobacconists[4] and early the next morning stealing 17 live fowls.[5] At the hen-roost trial the magistrate said 'were they convicted again they would probably be sentenced to penal servitude', and at his burglary trial the next day he was sentenced to 6 months,[6] which probably lead to his joining the army, the 2nd Berkshire Regiment, in 1886.[7] However this didn't immediately turn him around as he is in the military stockade in Ireland in 1887 for stealing.[8]
After leaving the army he was working as a Railway Porter in London when he married his wife Eleanor.[9] By 1911 he has started his career as a school attendance officer.
He served again in WWI this time he was a Sergeant in the 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment. [10] He returned to his work as a school attendance officer after the war and he was still working in that profession in 1934 when his son married.[11]
At some point while his son was young his wife was committed to a mental hospital where she remained until her death. His son believed that his mother had died and didn't discover she was alive until Frederick's death in 1945.[12]
