Note N548In 1940 Franklin Odell Pickett joined the Navy and took boot camp training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station in Chicago. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on the battleship U.S.S. Maryland on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Hawaii. Though he was a trumpet player in the Navy Band, he saw much action on that day, and throughout the war, in the Pacific Ocean. 1
#1. Franklin Odell was usually referred to as "Bud" But within the family and much of the community he was always also "Odell." He grew up in Hartford, Kansas but moved to Decatur, Illinois before completing high school. He lived with his Aunt Kathryn in Decatur and attended Decatur High. While still in high school he began working for Maury Kauffman at his meat market near the high school. In 1940 he joined the Navy and took boot camp training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station at Chicago. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor on the battleship U.S.S. Maryland on December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Hawaii. Though he was a trumpet player in the Navy Band, he saw much action on that day, and throughout the war, in the Pacific Ocean. He also lost many dear friends in the battles. 1
#2. On a stint back at Great Lakes, he met and married Margaret Paveglio. Their two daughters, Beverly and Kathy, were born during the war years. He was assigned to Washington, D.C. in 1944, where he served for the remainder of the war, playing with the Navy Band for government functions. As the "Big Bands" of the thirties and early forties regrouped in 1945, he was offered several opportunities to continue with his music career. He and Margaret felt he had seen enough of traveling and wanted to settle down and raise their family, so he declined all offers. 1
#3. After the war they settled for a time in Decatur. He and his father decided to go into business painting and decorating homes in Colorado Springs, which was just a small tourist town at that time. That business, unfortunately, did not last long. His father got the urge to move on and left Bud to care for the business. Bud put his dad on a train headed for Burlington, Kansas. After a time, Bud and Margaret moved back to Decatur where he went to work for the Railroad. By 1949 they had moved again, to Omaha, Nebraska, where Bud worked for the Post Office for a time before joining the Burlington Railroad. Bud had always loved the climate and the mountains of Colorado, so in the mid-fifties, the family moved again, this time to Pueblo, Colorado, where he continued work with the railroad. In the sixties, he started a sideline business cleaning carpets, which was very successful. 1
#4. Bud had a great sense of right and wrong and always tried to do the right thing. He was a very devoted husband and father. His daughters and his wife were the light and love of his life. 1
