James Oregon Pickett was born on March 3, 1846 in Lincoln, Tennessee, United States, son of Mark H Pickett (~1814–>1880) and Catherine Shelton (~1815–~1865).^[1]

In 1850, James (4) was living in Subdivision 2, Lincoln with his parents, Mark H (35) and Catherine (40); and George Pickett (8), Mary F Pickett (7), Mary Jones (30), and Margaret Jones (8). ^[2]

In 1860, James (14) was living in District 25, Lincoln with his parents, Mark H Pickette (45) and Catherine Pickette (46); and George Pickette (17), and Mary Pickette (14). ^[3]
