Biography

John William Pickett was born in 1894 in St Helens, Lancashire. He was the son of John Pickett and Mary Ann (Dixon) Pickett. His birth was registered in the last quarter of 1892, in Prescot district.

John's brother Joseph Pickett was born in 1896 in St Helens.

John's sister Victoria May Pickett was born in 1899 in St Helens. She died at 10 weeks old.

John's brother Harry Pickett was born in 1900 in St Helens.

By March 31st 1901, John's family were living at 27 Market Street, St Helens. His father was working as a glass bottle blower. The four surviving children - Edward (8), John (6), Joseph (4) and Harry (8 months old) were all in the household on census night, and there were two visitors - Richard Whelan, a 24-year-old lead works labourer, and 33-year-old Samuel Benjafield, also a lead works labourer.

By April 2nd 1911, the family were still living in St Helens, and John's father was still working as a bottle maker. The three oldest sons, Edward, John and Joseph, were all working at the bottle works - Edward as an apprentice bottle maker, the younger two as bottle works takers in. The family again had two visitors on census night - Samuel Benigafield and William Deadon. Samuel might be the same person as was visiting in 1901, although his birthplace was given as London in 1901 and St Helens in 1911, and his age as 33 in 1901 and 49 in 1911, but since he is buried in the family grave he must have been either a relative of some kind or a close friend.

John died in 1927 in St Helens, aged 32. He was buried on 18 Jun 1927 in St Helens Cemetery, in a family grave.
