After the death of his younger brother, Allen, and the birth of his sister, Mary Anne, in the depression years, his father's attractive job offer brought the family to Roanoke, Virginia. Following high school graduation, Bob's dad perceived that a summer start to college would be helpful to his budding engineer and off he went to Washington and Lee. Eager to pursue his engineering interest, he transferred after two years to VPI and graduated with an electrical engineering degree and subsequently, a Master's Degree from MIT. Jobs in Industry beckoned and after beginning at Bell Labs and Western Electric, he pursued opportunities at General Electric, Babcock and Wilcox and the Newport News Shipbuilding Company. Having begun his career teaching Physics at Roanoke College, he returned to the academic setting as an original faculty member in 1972 at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville where he taught pre-engineering and electronic technology, retiring after 21 years.

He was a ham radio operator, and took great delight in securing his pilot's license, later serving in the Civil Air Patrol. He enjoyed boating and even built several kinds of boats for his children's and family's fun. Photography and music performance (also a piano tuner) were of major interest as well as travel to all parts of the world. He was an active member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and a charter member of the mission, Grace and Glory Lutheran Church in Palmyra. An active community volunteer, he read for many years at Recording for the Blind.
