Biography

Joseph was born in 1822. He was the son of James Pickett and Eleanor Desha. He passed away in 1900. Graduated from Princeton in 1841, completed courses in Paris and traveled in Europe, Asia and Africa. Once at home, he became a professor in Bethany Colleg, a member of the Secession Convention of Virginia in 1861, chaplain in the Confederate Army, Kentucky Orphan Brigade and John C. Breckenridge's Division. He was in Atlanta duding the siege, ministering to the sick, wounded and dying. He was called "The Fighting Chaplain". He was the founder of the Kentucky Relief Society. He was president of the Agricultural, Mechanical and Military College at Lexington. He was Professor of English Literature at Kentucky University, President of the College of Arts, and President of the Bible College and Professor of Metaphysics Ancient and Modern Languages at the Agricultural and Mechanical College and Superintendent of Public Instruction for Kentucky. In retirement he moved to River Forest, near Chicago because his sons were in business in Chicago.
