I have been researching my family tree on and off for about 20 years, with great great input from my father.
I was born in London, as were many of my ancestors.
For queries about the Pickup family from Deptford or Greenwich area of Kent, now London, please contact Michael Pickup. The family were labourers and had tough lives, with many children dying young, and the parents often in trouble with the police. The name is common in Lancashire and other areas of northern England, but my line have been in London at least since 1750's
Middlesex |
There are 250,000 profiles from Greater London and about 160,000 from Middlesex (although some profiles are in both lists) so there is lots to do!
I am researching the History of Nonconformists in London, England and surrounding counties especially from 1750-1820. With restricted legal rights, as well as their own churches, they established their own schools, associations, charities, missionary societies and even a pension fund.
The aim is to write the history of English protestant nonconformists or dissenters from the perspective of the families involved. Many of these families were nonconformist for many generations, married other nonconformist families and were part of the nonconformist community which existed across the country.
This includes creating categories for the dissenting congregations and adding profiles of ministers and church members. I am also interested in nonconformist publications, organisations and charities, schools and dissenting academies.
I am researching the nonconformist families based mostly in London some of whom became involved in the Sandemanians.
An introduction to the Sandemanian Church includes an overview but also details of the categories used for the various families.

I noticed you made some changes to the profile for Annie Elizabeth (Hedgeland) Cooper (1868-1960). Is there a reason you removed the sources for the 1871 and 1881 censuses & the pension records (and maybe more - I didn't do an exhaustive check)? Is there a reason you removed the inline citation for her residence in 1891? Is there a reason you added a bold "birth" to the marriage source? I suspect the answer to all those questions is that you used WikiTree AGC to format the profile, and it did a crummy job and put a bunch of stuff it didn't understand under research notes, and then you just deleted it.
This profile had been edited seven times after the GEDCOM import and before you ran WikiTree AGC. In my experience, the tool works much better on "raw" GEDCOM imports, although even then you need to carefully check the changes before saving. Once the profiles have hand edits, the best solution is generally to hand write the biography. That allows you to make sure nothing is inadvertently deleted or confused.
Thanks, Paige

Thanks for the message. I am happy with my current arrangements, although feeling slightly guilty about not keeping up with everything. I am happy leading the London and Middlesex team, and also try to lead the East of England team. I also am managing the History of Nonconformist's in London topic, which is only ticking away in the background at the moment.
Thank you for joining the Mighty Oaks for the Connect-a-Thon. The 65 members who joined our teams were awesome. Our two teams added 12,905 profiles over the weekend. The Branches Team came second and the Roots Team came forth in the overall scores. Both teams were also in the top ten in the normalised scores. I hope you enjoyed it and will be joining us in April when we do it all over again.

Apprently John Singer Sargent and Frederick Barnard (Fred) were friends. Sargent's paintings of Alice (Faraday as was) and that of their daughters, Marion and Dorothy, in Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose look beautiful. In the Tate Gallery report on that picture they say that Marion was known as Polly and Dorothy as Dolly. Some say that Sarah Faraday (Barnard as was) was called Sally. I always wondered why my mother, whose name was Margaret, was given the family pet name of Molly (usually for girls named Mary). I now think it may have been part of a family pattern - Sally, Polly, Dolly ... Molly! She had several forebears with the name Mary; I wonder if any of them were called Molly too.
Well, the Connect A Thon was fun, we hope you enjoyed yourself and have fully recovered. Thank you for joining us. It is appreciated. The combined score of 13,284 - is 113 more than the last CAT so well done. The total overall figure was 85,839 profiles connected.

Thanks for the message, I am still enjoying being involved in the clean-a-thon as part of the Mighty Oaks.
Most of my research is based around the nonconformist churches in London, especially the Sandemanian Church, but also spreading into the network of Independent dissenting churches in Middlesex and Essex.
I did wonder if this should be considered a project, and so I have been in touch with the Religion Project to introduce myself and to explain what I am doing, and had a great reply from Eowyn, confirming that
"I think for now as long as you are happy to work on your own then you are doing things right. If at some point you wanted to get more people involved we could make it a team under the Religion project but if it's just you a free-space project is the way to go".
I have been surprised how many people have contacted me, to share their research and to ask for advice. I receive more than 1 a month, mostly researchers who are not on WT but have seen the freespace pages and make contact.
I would be happy for this to grow into a England Topic if you thought that might be appropriate.
cheers
Trevor

Thanks for taking responsibility for the Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.
Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!
Debi
PS If you have any GEDCOM cleanup to do, there is a tool that can help with the formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.
Wishing you a Happy and prosperous New Year. Thank you for all the work you have done to improve the English profiles on wikitree.
Just checking in with you to ask if you wish to remain a member of the England Data Doctor Team. Appreciate it if you could let me know

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around
First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?
Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Lizzie, Amy, Joan

Thanks for the message. I am well and still enjoying Wikitree.
I am working on the Families who were members of the Sandemanian or Glasite Church in London, many of whom were my direct ancestors. This involves about a dozen key families, many of whom married each other.
These families also were involved in small independent nonconformist church in the 1700's and I have been learning about them and creating some additional categories for these churches in London, often within the old City.
I have also written a number of histories of these families using the Freespace pages, as a way of keeping track of interesting facts. An introduction to the Sandemanian Church Other stories such as the fact that about 10 families in the church were linked to publishing are also interesting. Space:Sandemanians_and_the_bookbinding,_paper_and_publishing_trades.
I am happy to continue to contribute to the England Team events, such as the source-a-thon etc but must confess to not doing much else for the England Team (although I do adopt orphaned profiles linked to the church when I find them!).
cheers

With the New Year starting I am writing to ask if you wish to remain on the England DD Team for 2020. If you could let me know as I am updating the England DD Page]

I havent heard back from you about the break up of the United Kingdom Project. I hope all is well with you. I assume you dont wish to join any of the country-level projects at present, and will go ahead and remove the United Kingdom badge. If you wish to join England, Scotland, Wales or Ireland in the future, you would be most welcome to do so via the respective G2G sign-up post.
Many thanks for all your contributions,
Susie :-)
We realise the time has come to dissolve the UK Project in favour of the individual country projects of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
We are checking in with all UK badge holders to find out which country project(s) you would like to be in so you can collaborate with other members, have the opportunity to select which team(s) you would like to join, and so we can ensure you have all the correct badges.
Please respond by PM to let us know which country project(s) you would like to be in. Please dont assume we know. We are effectively starting from scratch to make sure no one falls through the cracks.
Once you have done this, the Coordinator for Membership in the relevant country project(s) will be in touch to help get you situated.
Many thanks,
Susie
Just a note to say registration opens on Monday for a new challenge Connect-A-Thon. The G2G registration question will be asked on Monday so keep your eyes open for it.
If you are interested in working with the Sandringham Strollers again Gillian and I would be delighted to have you in the team.
