Francis William Pierce was born in Pittsburgh, PA as the second son of the "Pittsburgh Eight," the eight sons of John Pierceand Sarah Cassidy.
Francis W. Pierce (“Frank”) was born January 7, 1869, growing up with his brothers on Liberty Street in the Strip District in Pittsburgh. By the time of the 1900 Census, his mother Sarah and some of the children lived at 192 Southern Avenue, Unit 19 1/2 in the Mt. Oliver Borough of Pittsburgh, including Francis. In 1902 he was in Pittsburgh, and married Kathryn E. Keating on November 20 of that year at St. Paul's Cathedral. Records show he was a carpenter like his father, more specifically he is listed as a "paper hanger" more than once in censuses. His marriage certificate shows him as a “merchant.”
Frank and Katherine Pierce had one child, a son, Francis Keating Pierce, born in 1905 in Pittsburgh while he and his wife lived on Penn Street. On November 5, 1908, when his son was 3, Francis died, at the age of 39, of an "internal obstruction" with a service following at St. Canice's in Pittsburgh. He is buried at the family plot at St. Mary's. His wife, after Frank's death, returned with their son to her remaining family in Cleveland, Ohio.
