Biography

John Pearse was born on 17 Feb 1686, in Boston, Suffolk County, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was the son of Samuel Pearse and Mary Ortou.[1]

John Pearce established himself in Marblehead as a baker. He was prosperous enough that, by 1732/3, he could stand as surety for Richard Pierce in a court judgement in favor of Lazarous Lebarron, a physician ("Physition") of Plymouth, for £30.19s, plus court costs of £3.12s. (The ruling in 1736 went against John, by default, and he was assessed a total of £34 13s plus additional court costs of £3.13s.3d.)[2] In March of 1735/6, he had defaulted on another judgement against him in the Plymouth courts, this one brought by Thomas Murdoch, a merchant of Plymouth, against John and Josiah Sturtevant, a saddler of Plymouth, who had hired a sloop, the Elizabeth, for £20 per month, then employed her for a month and 10 days. Thomas Murdoch was suing for £26.13s.4d. After defaulting, the court assessed John (who had been served the writ) that amount, plus court costs of £3.10s.[3]

John married Elizabeth Merrett in Marblehead on 30 Nov 1715.[4] They had at least 15 children, including three sets of twins. Note that his obituary stated that he had 17 children, including the twins.[5] The following 15, however, can be assigned to John and Elizabeth Merrett with some certainty, since he was the only John Pearce (or Pearse) registering children in Marblehead at the time.

  1. John Pearse (bp. 6 Jan 1717, Second Congregational Church;[6] d. before 19 Jan 1724)
  2. Elizabeth Pearse (twin, bp. 16 Aug 1719, Second Congregational Church)[7]
  3. Mary Pearse (twin, bp. 16 Aug 1719, Second Congregational Church)[8]
  4. Sarah Pearse (bp. 9 Jul 1721, Second Congregational Church)[9]
  5. John Pearse (bp. 19 Jan 1724, Second Congregational Church;[10] d. poss. before 24 May 1747, if Elizabeth Dixey was the second wife of this John Pearce)
  6. Rebecca Pearse (bp. 6 Feb 1726, Second Congregational Church;[11] d. before 12 Feb 1727)
  7. Rebecca Pearse (bp. 12 Feb 1727, Second Congregational Church)[12]
  8. Jane Pearse (twin, bp. 23 Feb 1729, Second Congregational Church)[13]
  9. Mehitable Pearse (twin, bp. 23 Feb 1729, Second Congregational Church)[14]
  10. Jean Pierce (bp. 17 Jan 1730/1, First Congregational Church)[15]
  11. Anna Pearse (bp. 7 Jan 1733, Second Congregational Church)[16]
  12. Ruhamah Pearce (bp. 1 Jan 1735, Second Congregational Church;[17] d. before 31 Jan 1738)
  13. Martha Pearse (twin, bp. 31 Jan 1738, Second Congregational Church)[18]
  14. Ruhamah Pearse (twin, bp. 31 Jan 1738, Second Congregational Church)[19]
  15. Nathaniel Pearse (bp. 23 Sep 1739, Second Congregational Church)[20]

No documentation has been found for Elizabeth Merrett Pearce's death, although it can probably be assumed that she died in Marblehead. Since the next marriage for John (now Deacon John) was on 2 Jul 1765, Elizabeth must have died before that date.

Deacon John Pearce married Rebekah (Stacey) Mansfield, widow of Captain Isaac Mansfield, in Marblehead on 2 Jul 1765.[21] Rebekah must have died by 1769, since John remarried that year. No children were born of this marriage.

On 25 Jul 1769, when he was about 82 years old, Deacon John Pearce married Mistress Mary Chadwell at the Second Congregational Church in Marblehead.[22]

Deacon John Pearce died in Marblehead at the age of 97, on 13 Feb 1784. According to a notice of his death, published in the New Hampshire Gazette, he had 17 children, six of them twins.[23] He was buried in the Unitarian Cemetery in Marblehead.[24]

Research Notes

Elizabeth Dixey married a John Pearce in Marblehead on 19 Aug 1746.[25] If Elizabeth Dixey Pearce was the second wife of Deacon John Pearce, she died before 2 Jul 1765, when Deacon John married this third wife, Rebekah (Stacey) Mansfield. The alternative might be that she was the first wife of Deacon John's son, John, born in 1724, who would have been about 22 at the time of the marriage. Given how closely their children were spaced, it seems more probable that their parents were young.

  1. John Pearce (bp. 24 May 1747, Second Congregational Church;[26] d. before 20 Nov 1748)
  2. John Pearse (bp. 20 Nov 1748, Second Congregational Church;[27] d. possibly 9 Mar 1828, of "palsy," a. 79 y.[28]
  3. Robert Pearse (bp. 27 Jan 1751, Second Congregational Church)[29]
  4. Joseph Pearse (bp. 17 Feb 1754, Second Congregational Church)[30]
  5. Richard Pearse (bp. 9 Nov 1755, Second Congregational Church)[31] Note: A Richard Pearce, possibly this one, was among those who appeared in a list (from 1880) of 21 citizens of Marblehead who were impressed by the British Navy during the Revolutionary War.[32]

Possible children of another John and Elizabeth Pearse (or Pearce). This cannot be Deacon John, who married Mary Chadwell in 1769. Note: this could be either a son, John, or, since one record indicates the father was "John, 3d", a grandson. There was a John Pearce who married Elizabeth Rogers on 26 Dec 1771.[33]

  1. Elizabeth Pearce (bp. 20 Sep 1772, Second Congregational Church)[34]
  2. John Pearce (bp. 26 Feb 1775, Second Congregational Church)[35]
  3. Samuel Rogers Pearce (bp. 3 Jan 1779, Second Congregational Church)[36]
  4. Lydia Pearce (bp. 12 Nov 1780, Second Congregational Church)[37]
  5. John Pearce (bp. 27 Jan 1782, Second Congregational Church)[38]
  6. Lydia Pearce (bp. 18 Jan 1784, Second Congregational Church)[39]
  7. Lucy Pearce (bp. 5 Sep 1790, Second Congregational Church)[40]

Children of John and Mary Pearse (or Pearce). Note: this cannot be Deacon John, since he was married to Rebekah in July of 1765; it is probably a grandson, a son John of his son John - although the second one could conceivably be the child of Deacon John and Mary Chadwell, since they married in 1769, but he would have been about 85 years old at the time. There was another John Pearce who married Mary Vickrey on 8 Jan 1765.[41] There was a previous marriage of a John Pearce and a Martha Tory, on 29 Dec 1757.[42] These two marriages therefore probably involved one John Pearce.

  1. Martha Pearce (bp, 29 Dec 1765, Second Congregational Church)[43]
  2. Ruth Pearce (bp. 18 Aug 1771, Second Congregational Church)[44]
