George Henry Pierce was born in 1851 in Barham, Kent, and christened on 23 February. [1] He was the fourth son of John Pierce and Eliza Bushell.
The 1851 census records him aged 0 living with his parents and siblings on their farm in Barham, Kent. [2]
John and Eliza, with their six children Thomas (10); John (8); William (6); George (4); Eliza (2); and Alma (infant) are recorded arriving in Lyttleton on board the Cashmere on 23 October 1855. John was 32. His occupation is recorded as gardener; Eliza was 28. [3]
In New Zealand John and Eliza were publicans, running the Golden Fleece Hotel in Christchurch, and later, the British Hotel in Lyttelton.
George married Kate Allwright in 1875. [4]
George and Kate had at least seven children, four of whom survived to adulthood.
George followed his parents’ career pathway, as did his brothers William and Charles. George ran the Saxon Hotel in Lyttelton, taking over the lease in 1880. [5] The Saxon - as all hotels in Canterbury in the late 1800s - had a chequered and colourful history.
Kate passed away in 1931.
George passed away in 1933, aged 82.
George and Kate are buried in Bromley cemetery, Christchurch. [6]
