The last name of James appeared at least once as Pearce when his brother N. B. witnessed his implication of a Civil War pension, since James neither read nor wrote. After his death in 1904 his widow applied for a Civil War Widow's pension, and that time signed her name Pierce. His wife was from Caswell Co. N.C. where many Pierces live and so spelled their last name. When his son John Pierce applied for Social Security benefits, he found his name spelled Pearce with that government agency.
Although born in Virginia, James S. Pierce was living in Caswell Co. NC at the start of the Civil War. He crossed the NC/VA border to sign up in his birth county, Halifax, and he fought with the Northern Army of Virginia. He was wounded in the final months of the war defending Richmond. (Company F, 34 Reg.)
The State of NC has three marriage dates for James and Sarah, Feb. 6th, 7th and 9th, 1867.[1]
His death was reported in the Greensboro where he was living when he died.
Burial: Lowes United Methodist Church Cemetery Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina, USA. [2]
